Liz Claiborne is a fashion company started in 1976 in New York by Belgian-born designer Liz Claiborne, her husband Art Ortenberg, and business partners Leonard Boxer and Jerome Chazen. Emerging just as women were entering the workforce in large numbers, the company made a name for itself by offering mix-and-match women’s separates grouped into a single collection within the store—a radical concept when it was introduced. The clothing and concept were an immediate success. The company added accessories to its line in 1980, and a men’s line named simply “Claiborne” soon followed. Liz Claiborne became the first company founded by a woman to enter the Fortune 500.

Claiborne and Ortenberg retired from management of the company in 1989, after which the company’s management acquired several up and coming fashion brands of the late 1990s and early 2000s, including Juicy Couture, Mexx and Lucky.
